Soiling Comparison of Mirror Film and Glass Concentrating Solar Power Reflectors in Southwest Louisiana

Soiling effects influence the output of solar thermal plants, significantly causing unwanted transmittance, reflectance, and absorbance losses. Research is needed to identify what type reflective surfaces are best suited for semitropical climates, such as southeastern United States. This paper initially presents a review several concentrating power (CSP) reflector testbeds used analyze soiling various materials. A testbed developed this study that comprised six sets mounted at fixed tilt 30 degrees: three thin-film glass types. Two generations 3M mirror film (SMF), SMF 1100 2020, were along with Konica Minolta SMF, silvered Corning Willow Glass, dichroic cold mirror, standard mirror. Results show 2020 performed during regular cleaning intervals, whereas Glass gave performance if only cleaned naturally. The other types showed least average loss due throughout but lowest specular reflection.
